Ballet School “Ghost” / Out Of Town Films

Any time we travel to a new city, we reach out via the Internet in hopes of anyone knowing of a band in the city we’re in and if they’d like to film with us. The results we’ve gotten are very interesting so far, dating back to last year with a few sessions we filmed in Barcelona, Paris and Amsterdam.

I was in Europe a few weeks ago and was fortunate enough to travel to Berlin. Again it started with reaching out through the massive tubes of the Internet, ultimately getting pointed in the direction of a lovely Berlin band called Ballet School. So I hopped on a train one evening and got off at Frankfurter Alle. I was greeted by Ballet School’s vocalist Rosie Blair, who’s blonde hair, red lipstick and large grey coat she said to look for were easy to find amidst the train station crowd.

We talked while making our way towards the bands rehearsal space, Rosie explaining this particular neighborhoods history as we walked. We arrived to “Subland” a few minutes later where I met the other two members of the band, Louis and Miguel. What came next were two performances of songs of theirs performed slightly different from their usual nature, the first of which being a track called “Ghost.”

Lenka “Nothing Here but Love” / Out Of Town Films

When we met up with Aussie native Lenka a little while ago to film a session out back of World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. It was a partly cloudy day so we found ourselves playing a game with the sun, trying to catch it before it hid behind the clouds.  Whenever the sun was out, she played two songs for us that day. The second of which is a track called “Nothing Here But Love”, the opening track off her latest album, “Shadows”. Enjoy.

Water Liars “Just Be Simple” (Songs Ohia Cover) - Philadelphia, Pa

A few months back, we pulled up to 6th and Girard and with Mississippi natives Water Liars, and made our way into the old building of Girard Hall. Previously we released an original song of theirs called “Linens.” They played another track that night, a cover, which is a Songs Ohia original, entitled “Just Be Simple.” Enjoy.

Kopecky Family Band “Are You Listening” - Camden, NJ

If you were in Camden, NJ last Sunday, the final day of WXPN’s XPoNential festival, you too experienced the flash floods that nearly swept us all back to our respective homes.

We were set to film with Kopecky Family Band around 3:30 that afternoon. The band had just finished a last minute and secondary show whilst covering for an ill Lianne La Havas. It was nearly 3:30 on the dot when the sky decided to open up and flood the streets, soak the crowd and wash out Dawes’ festival closing set. There was no way we were going to be able to film outside like we had our previous four sessions, all of which were done by the waterfront, and the rain did not look like it was going to let up any time soon. One thought was to film on their converted tour bus; however, the band mentioned they were staying about fifteen minutes down the road if we wanted to go to their hotel and do the shoot there. We obliged.

So we found ourselves in the pool room of their hotel a little ways away from the festival grounds. With a twenty foot high mural of a beach as a backdrop, and the glimmer of the hotel pool surrounding us, it made for an interesting session, both visually and acoustically, to say the least. It’s far different from the other sessions, yet the story leading up to this one proved to spur a bit of creativity. Here’s Kopecky Family Band performing “Are You Listening.” Enjoy.

Lenka “After The Winter” - Philadelphia, PA
Whenever we encounter an artist from the land down under, they always have a similar vibe personality wise. Very laid back and always very friendly. It was no different when we hung out with Aussie singer/songwriter, Lenka.
We met her outback of World Cafe Live under the train tracks. She was just hanging out, warming up with her guitarist when she greeted us with a big smile and inviting accent. After we were all set up, Lenka performed us a lullaby written with her son in mind called “After The Winter”. Enjoy.

The Districts “Long Distance” - Philadelphia, Pa

For our third ‘pop up’ series installment, The Districts played a track called “Long Distance,” which was actually their second tune of the night at Girard Hall. Again, we can’t say enough about these dudes, so we’ll just let this song speak for itself. Enjoy.

Jeffrey Lewis “wwprd” - Philadelphia, PA

We met up with Jeffrey Lewis one evening last month before his show at the newly opened DIY space in Philadelphia called The West Kensington Ministry. It’s a old beautiful church that allows artists and bands to play the occasional show in the basement. The upstairs is a massive sanctuary with no working lights that relies solely on sunlight through the stained glass windows. Since it was late in the day, we had to take advantage of the waning light and we managed to do so before the night overcame the day. Jeffrey played us a new song called “WWPRD” which stands for “What would Pussy Riot do?”. Enjoy.

Pure Bathing Culture “Only Lonely Lovers” - Philadelphia, Pa

Portland’s Pure Bathing Culture played us two songs a few weeks ago when they came through Philadelphia. Normally doused with dreamy reverb, it was a nice change to hear the duo stripped down . “Only Lonely Lovers” is a short and sweet song, and a lovely accompaniment to our previously released session, “Ivory Coast.” Enjoy.

Pickwick “Hacienda Motel” / Out Of Town Films

For the second song Pickwick played for us, we headed upstairs to the balcony of Union Transfer that looked over the empty venue floor that would soon be full with a few hundred fans. We had to patiently wait for what seemed like a hour for the other band on the bill to sound check before we could start. It was a good chance for the guys to recover from their Paesano’s induced food comas. Shortly after the sound check came to a close, the fellas ripped through a rendition of “Hacienda Motel”. Enjoy.

Toy Soldiers “Tomorrow To Today” - Philadelphia, Pa

We’ve known Toy Soldiers for a while now, back in the days when they had 10+ people in the band.. Now they’ve consolidated to just a five piece, which is arguably for the better, with lead man Ron Gallo as the staple of the band throughout all these years.

They just released their new record ‘The Maybe Boys’ and have been out on the road ever since. Before they left, we hosted our second ‘pop-up’ show with them at their practice space in the Kensington neighborhood of Philly. Here’s part one of our three part series with the band. The song is their album closer called “Tomorrow To Today”. Enjoy.

The Districts “Dressed To Kill” / Out Of Town Films

One steamy day back in July, we hosted our first ‘pop up’ show with local Philadelphia band The Districts. They’re a bunch of 18 year old kids who just graduated high school.  This is the last song they played for us and the intimate crowd at the impromptu show. It’s called “Dressed To Kill”. Enjoy.

Pretty stoked that Nigel Godrich(aka Radiohead’s producer)’s band, ultraista, will be in Philly in two weeks at the Underground Arts. I had no idea about their tour and music until I randomly stumbled upon it yesterday. So glad I did.

Delicate Steve “Many Moods” - Philadelphia, PA - 12/02/2012

At first we weren’t exactly sure this session was even going to happen. Delicate Steve were traveling to Philadelphia from Virginia, where they had played a show the night before, and making it in time to fit in a session seemed unlikely. The only way we could make it happen was if we shot their soundcheck at the venue. Normally, that’s something we try to avoid but since we had never filmed at PhilaMOCA and the band had a crazy lighting set up, we figured we’d give it a go.

Delicate Steve and their music take on a whole new energy when it’s performed in a live setting. Sure, their records capture the sounds, but it doesn’t always capture the intensity that is felt when it’s seen live. We did our best to capture that angle of the band when they performed “Many Moods” for us before they melted faces at their gig later on that night. Enjoy.
